Take a look back at Latvian animation spotlight at CARTOON MOVIE 2025!
 

More than 800 attendees and 55 incredible animation projects from across Europe – what an honor it was to be part of CARTOON MOVIE 2025 and together shine a spotlight on the Latvian animation.

​

Over three exciting days in Bordeaux, between networking, connecting, and planning future collaborations, three upcoming Latvian animation projects were pitched:

• Born in the Jungle by Edmunds Jansons (Atom Art, Letko, Hausboot) 

• The Northern Star by Kārlis Vītols (Studija Kokles, Yabunousagi) 

• Karmic Knot by Signe Baumane (Studio Locomotive, My Marriage Project)

Adding to the celebration, the producers of Latvia’s Oscar-winning animation film Flow by Gints Zilbalodis – Dream Well Studio (LV), Sacrebleu Productions (FR) and Take Five (BE) – were honored with this year’s Cartoon Tribute award for European Producers of the Year!

Five animated films will compete for the highest award in Latvian cinema "Lielais Kristaps 2024" .

In 2024, the nominees for the Best Animated Film are:

“BRĪNUMSKAPIS”: “Manai mammai nav bail” / “Viss, ko nedrīkst” / “Durvju burvis”  (dir.  Krista Burāne);

"FREERIDE IN C"  (dir. Edmunds Jansons);

"KAFKA. IEMĪLĒJIES"  (dir. Zane Oborenko);

"STRAUME" (dir. Gints Zilbalodis).

In the category "Best Animated Film Director", the nominees include all the previously mentioned directors, along with Toms Burāns. We are also delighted to see a large number of talented artists in the category of "Best Animated Film Artist".

On Monday, December 9, CBS News announced nominees for the "Golden Globes", which is assumed to be a reliable prediction of "Oscar" nominations. 

FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis has been nominated as one of the six best “Best Animated Motion Picture" and is the first Latvian film to ever earn a "Golden Globes" nomination.

The Emile Awards are back! And… among the nominated films are also films from Latvia!

Emile Awards selection team has chosen the films for Emile Awards 2024:

• The nominee for “Best Sound Design and Music in Short Film“ “Misaligned” directed by Marta Magnuska, Animoon and Atom Art.

• The nominee for “Best Writing in a Feature”, “Best Soundtrack in a Feature”, “Best Backgrounds and Character Design in a Feature”, “Best Animation in a Feature” and “Best Of The Best Feature” categories My Love Affair With Marriage, directed by Signe Baumane, Studija Lokomotīve.

This year the ceremony will be hosted by ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival- on Monday, 23rd of September.

Good news from Canada and the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF)!

The new short film FREERIDE IN C (Edmunds Jansons, Atom Art) will have its world premiere in Ottawa International Animation Festival's “Non-Narrative” animated short film competition program!

​

And that's not all yet! An animated film FLOW  (Gints Zilbalodis, Dream Well Studio) continues to conquer the hearts of the world and has been selected for the “Animated Features” selection!

If you didn’t get the chance to see Flow at the Festival de Cannes, don’t worry, because FLOW has been included in the Feature Film competition of Annecy International Animation Film Festival!

​

"I am happy to return to the Annecy Film Festival where five years ago my film AWAY won the Contrechamp Award. After this event, festivals and film distributors attention was paid to my work, it allowed me to reach a wide audience and later also attract international co-producers and finance to make the next film on a lot larger scale. It probably wouldn't have happened without the Contrechamp Award. At the Annecy Film Festival, tens of thousands of animation film fans from all over the world join to see the most important new animated films, they live with them. I have never experienced such an atmosphere anywhere at another festival," says Gints Zilbalodis.

Until April 1, 2024, the Baltic Shorts Residency 2024 is open for short film scripts!

​

Film directors and scriptwriters from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are invited to submit short film scripts to the fifth edition of the script development programme.

​

3 selected participants will have an intensive script development group workshop and individual consultations with Anna Ciennik on site in Kintai, followed by 2–3 weekly individual online sessions and group session at the end of the programme.

​

We wish all the applicants the best of luck in developing their stories!

Signe Baumane's MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH MARRIAGE has been longlisted among Oscar candidates!

Of the 33 best animated film category qualifying films, five will be nominated for the shortlist. US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the nominees on January 23, 2024.

Great news from the Eurimages!

In 2023, the Executive Committee of the Eurimages Fund has decided to support co-production of 33 feature films, one of the 2 animated films being BORN HAPPY, produced at the Atom Art studio, directed by Edmunds Jansons.

The eighth edition of Riga International Film festival has come to an end, but you still have the opportunity to watch a discussion about co-production between Vladimir Leschiov and the representative of NFB, Canadian producer, Marc Bertrand. It took place during the Baltic Animation Meet-Up, which is organised in partnership with the Latvian Animation Association.

With deep sadness Latvian Animation association marks the loss of Nils Skapāns (1969-2021). Nils Skapāns was the only Latvian master of plasticine animation, in his short creative career he has produced more than 40 stop motion films. His last film THE NAP will premiere early 2022 and is nominated for the Best Director and Best Short 2021 at the National Film Awards.

FLOW brings Latvia first-ever "Oscar"!

On Sunday, March 2, FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis won in the category "Best Animated Feature Film" and it is the first-ever "Oscar" for Latvia. FLOW also became the first indie film ever to win in this category.

​

Film was also nominated for “Best International Feature Film”. 

​

Since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, “Flow” has become an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of Latvian cinema. 

​

Animated film FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis has won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film of the year, becoming the first Latvian film to win the award.

​

Receiving the award, film director Gints Zilbalodis said: "This film is made by a very small and young but passionate team in a place where there is no big film industry, so this is the first time that a film from Latvia has been here, which is a huge achievement for us.

On Saturday, December 7, the European Film Academy Awards ceremony took place in Lucerne, Switzerland, where Latvia was represented by Gints Zilbalodis animated film FLOW, which was nominated in two categories – for the best European animated film of the year and the European Film of the Year award.

FLOW  won In the "Best Animated Feature Feature" category.

Roze Stiebra's SIRDS LIKUMS becomes the Best Animated Film of Latvia in 2023 and receives Lielais Kristaps 2023 award.

Roze Stiebra was also admitted the Best Animated Film Director, and Aleksejs Naumovs - the Best Animated Film Artist of 2023.

In honor of the founding of Latvia, 15 Latvian films are available for viewing worldwide on the film portal filmas.lv!

From November 11 to 18, Latvia celebrates Patriot Week, dedicated to the events of the state's founding festivities.

The growing global attention on Latvian animation, driven by the remarkable success of FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis, has led CARTOON MOVIE to shine a spotlight on the Latvian animation scene at its 2025 edition.

From March 4-6 in Bordeaux, 16 directors, studio representatives, and other Latvian animation and film professionals will be present to connect with the international animation community. Moreover, the CARTOON MOVIE will feature three upcoming animation projects:

The Latvian Selection Committee, a commission of film industry experts established by the National Film Center of Latvia, have announced that Gints Zilbalodis’ FLOW is the country's official entry for the 97th Academy Awards Best International Feature award.

​

The film has already received high praise from Guillermo Del Toro following its rapturous reception at Cannes in Un Certain Regard. Flow went on to win four prizes at Annecy in June, including the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution, the Audience Award and the Jury Award, as well as the special prize for best original music, and will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

The most important international animation film festival in the world Annecy International Animation Film Festival will begin in less than 2 weeks - as well as the wonderful film market MIFA (International Animation Film Market).

​

And we will be there! Meet the representatives of Latvian animation from 11 to 15 June we will be together with our neighbors Estonia and Lithuania at the Baltic stand – D.19!

​

The Latvian stand is organised thanks to the support of Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia and National Film Centre of Latvia.

On March 29, 2024, Sabine Andersone assumes the role of the head of the Latvian Animation Association.

Sabine, the founder and CEO of the acclaimed 2D animation studio Atom Art, is among the most seasoned Latvian producers, boasting nearly 15 years of experience across various genres and formats of animated films, and is one of the co-founders of LAA.

Five animated films will compete for the highest award in Latvian cinema Lielais Kristaps 2023.

​

In 2023, the nominees for the Best Animated Film are:

BEIGU BEIGAS (dir. Linda Sture);

KĀJĀM GAISĀ (dir. Dace Riduze);

KUR MANAS ATSLĒGAS? (dir. Indra Sproge);

LIELAIS INDRIĶIS (dir. Janis Cimmermanis);

SIRDS LIKUMS (dir. Roze Stiebra).

All of the directors are also nominated for the Best Animated Film Director award, and their artists will compete for the honor of the Best Animated Film Artist. We are happy to see  a couple of animation films among the nominees of the Best Student Film category as well!

The awards will be given out on February 4, 2024. Looking forward!

Latvia will be the guest country at the 18th edition of the Romania's premier animation festival Animest (6-15 October, 2023)!

Best Latvian animated film of 2022 - Signe Baumane's MYLOVE AFFAIR WITH MERRIAGE!

The winners of the Latvian National Film Award Lielais Kristaps 2022 were disclosed by the end of Ferbuary 2023.

​

In total, 4 animated films were up and running for prizes:

On January 26 and 27, three Roze Stiebra’s short films are to pop out of the treasure chest of restored shorts of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2023!

​

The film programme A Cornucopia of Visions and Stories that is labeled under the festival section Cinema Regained will feature three of Roze’s beloved by Latvians films from the 70ies and 80ies.

​

Along shorts from Hungary’s Sándor Reisenbüchle and [back in the day] Czechoslovakia’s Jaroslava Havettová the spectators will see:

Congratulations to several animation producers and directors who have received the development funding via the State Culture Capital Foundation:

– Animācijas Brigāde and their feature BITES;

– Atom Art and their short film BEIGU BEIGAS;

– Studio Kokles and their debut short of director Ella Mežule.

Agora, the international meeting and market event, will host an event dedicated to Baltic animated film industry – a roundtable “Animation in the Baltics” moderated by Anna Zača, curator and head of the Latvian Animation Association. 

It will take place on 23 September at 17:40 at Cultural Center of Hermoupolis and will point out the differences in animated film production in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.

Riga International Film festival has announced the open call of SHORT RIGA Test Screenings. If you have a short film project in the post production stage in the works, don't hesitate to apply! Various techniques and genres are accepted. Deadline 15th August. More information HERE.

Latvian State Culture Capital Foundation has supported the development of Kārlis Vītols' first feature film THE NORTHERN STAR which is set to premiere in 2025. As well as a project to develop sound design for 6 new student animation films which will be ready autumn 2021.

Gints Zilbalodis has teamed up with a producer Matīss Kaža (Latvia) and co-producer Ron Dyens (France), for his new feature FLOW. A story of a stubbornly independent Cat who is forced to share a small boat with a group of other animals. This project is part of the MIFA Pitches 2021 line-up.
